Common Errors

A list of errors commonly made by Japanese speakers of English.
日本人に多い、間違いを集めました。

Examples:
1)"hand made"
'hand made' doesn't always mean the same as "home made". For example, a factory may produce handmade furniture. If you mean that you made it yourself, then it's best to say "This is home-made."

2)"my friend's David"
I often hear phrases like "my friend's David". It should be "my friend David".
The reason is clear; it's a direct translation of Japanese, but 's should be used only for possession, or instead of "is" or "has"

3)"I took a vacation for 2 nights and 3 days."
This is a common example of Japanese saying more than native speakers say. It's not wrong, but it's not natural. English speakers say either "2 nights" or "3 days"; we don't need both.
